How to Care for Your Natural Stone Countertops

Daily Maintenance Tip

For daily maintenance, mild dish soap and warm water are usually enough to clean your natural stone countertops. Simply mix a small amount of dish soap with warm water, apply with a soft cloth or sponge, and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Sanitizing Tip

To sanitize your countertops, mix 50:50 isopropyl alcohol and water with a bit of dish soap. Spray the solution onto your countertops, let sit for a few minutes, and wipe clean with a soft cloth or sponge. This is especially important for kitchen countertops where food and bacteria may be present.

Scratch Prevention Tip

Avoid using any chemicals or harsh abrasive sponges or pads on your countertops, as they can damage the surface. Instead, use a soft cloth or sponge and gentle cleaning products.

Caring for Specific Natural Stone Materials

Granite, Quartzite, Dolomite, and Marble Countertops

At Planet Stone Marble & Granite, we offer a solvent-based sealant that, with proper care, will protect your new countertops for 10 to 15 years. This makes in-home aftercare as easy as possible. Simply clean your new natural stone countertops with warm soapy water or chemical-free, all-natural cleaners.

Quartz Countertops

Since quartz contains polymers, sealing it is unnecessary. However, it’s still best to stick to mild detergents, soapy water, and gentle cleaning products for daily care. Cleaners made specifically for quartz surfaces work well for countertops that are drenched in natural light, as they contain added UV protection to keep the stone from fading or turning yellow over time.
